Types of Drainage Channels and Trench Drains We Offer

We answer your questions about our water drainage channels

The drainage channels, also known as linear drainage systems, are systems designed to collect, convey, and evacuate water accumulated from rain, cleaning, or industrial processes. These elements are integrated into pavements, raised floors, or structures, allowing for quick and safe water evacuation.

Their primary function is to prevent build-ups, ponding, and infrastructure deterioration. They collect surface water and direct it towards the sewerage system or to treatment points. They operate using an appropriate gradient which facilitates flow, and are usually covered by grates to prevent obstructions from debris or sediment.

At Inza, all our channels are designed under technical criteria for flow rate, load type, and resistance to chemical or mechanical agents.

Broadly speaking, in our catalogue you will find different types of channels for every need:

  • Rainwater Channels: designed for urban environments, industrial roofs, courtyards, streets, and communal areas.
  • Surface Water Drainage Channels: with high flow capacity and impact resistance.
  • Wastewater Drainage Channels: ideal for industrial or food processing environments.
  • Channels with Grating: in stainless steel, galvanised, or polymeric.

The installation process for these systems is fast and precise:

  1. Technical analysis of the environment and flow rate calculation
  2. Selection of the appropriate channel based on water type (rainwater or wastewater), traffic, and environment
  3. Preparation of the base with controlled gradient
Placement of the channel and gratings according to project drawings
  4. Sealing, fixing, and flow tests before commissioning
  • Rainwater Channels: designed to collect rainwater. These rainwater channels are typically installed outdoors, at building entrances, in streets or on industrial roofs.
  • Wastewater Channels: aimed at industrial sectors where it is necessary to convey water containing waste, grease or chemical agents. Manufactured from materials resistant to corrosion and high temperatures.

Based on 3 criteria:

  1. Load class. The first step is to determine the type of channel required based on its intended location. Depending on its mechanical resistance, it will withstand different types of traffic passing over it. Furthermore, we will need to check the UNE1433 standard and its classification. Should you have any doubts, please contact us!
  2. Hydraulic capacity. The purpose of a drainage channel is to convey water, preventing its accumulation in an area intended to remain dry. In this instance, to select the most suitable channel, we need to know:

    · The channel’s hydraulic capacity. This will depend on its effective cross-section.

    · The flow rate to be evacuated. This will depend on three factors: the expected precipitation, the area to be drained, and the pavement run-off coefficient of the area to be drained.

  3. Non-technical criteria. Typically, there are several different channel models that can meet the aforementioned technical requirements.
Generally, the decision is made based on economic criteria: for the same hydraulic capacity, narrower and taller channels are more economical and hydraulically more efficient than wider and shallower ones. However, sufficient height is not always available to use them.

The type of grating (slotted, hidden, perforated, etc.), the material it is manufactured from (galvanised steel, stainless steel, ductile cast iron, polymer concrete, composite), and the type of locking system used, lead to significant aesthetic and functional differences. For example, channels that are silent when traffic passes over them, or channels that resemble an expansion joint.
